WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- With summer in full swing, people are still looking for a quick way to lose weight and many are turning to intermittent fasting.

  • Intermittent fasting is going a specific amount of time without eating and then giving yourself a certain amount of time of eat
  • Krista Kiger, a dietitian with Novant Health says is not always healthy because there isn't a one size fits all for nutrition plans
  • She says when people aren't getting enough calories, they're often losing their muscle tissue before fat tissue

Intermittent fasting is going a specific amount of time without eating and then giving yourself a certain amount of time of eat.

Dietitians say there are several variations of intermittent fasting including how long the fasting period lasts, what you're allowed to consume during the fasting period, and how often you're fasting.

Krista Kiger, a dietitian with Novant Health says there are three things to consider when looking at different diets:

  1. Is it healthy?
  2. Is it sustainable?
  3. What are the long-term consequences?

She says intermittent fasting is not always healthy because there isn't a one size fits all for nutrition plans.

Kiger also says she hasn't met many people who can sustain it and says it can slow down your metabolism.

According to her, intermittent fasting is especially unhealthy for those with irritable bowel syndrome or have struggled with an eating disorder in the past.

She says when people aren't getting enough calories, they're often losing their muscle tissue before fat tissue.

Most importantly, Kiger says it's important to speak to your doctor before starting a diet such as Keto and intermittent fasting.
