TRIAD, N.C.-- Local wildlife experts say its becoming more common to see deer in residential neighborhoods around Greensboro and Winston-Salem.

  • Deer are becoming more common in residential neighborhoods in the Triad.
  • Experts warn you should not feed them, because you don’t know what nutrition they need, and they might become dependent on your food.
  • Experts also say as deer lose their fear of humans, it becomes impossible for them to survive in the wild.

Those same experts say you should not leave food for them, even if you are well-intentioned, and even if you think you know what deer should eat.

Michele Poe with Wildlife Rehab Inc. in Forsyth County said deer corn is not healthy. She also said it is better to admire the deer from afar.

“It is very poor nutrition and if they’re dependent on humans for their food, they do not learn to forge on their own, and therefore, cannot survive without human dependency,” Poe said.

Poe said that is exactly what happened with a fawn under her care currently. Someone was treating him like a pet, and he didn't learn how to forge. Now, he might have to be euthanized if he cannot learn.

If you find a fawn on its own without its mom, Poe said do not take it in thinking you are rescuing it. She said that is the mother's way of teaching the fawn how to hide and survive on its own. She said taking it in is ultimately giving it a death sentence.

Plus, it's illegal in the Triad.
