LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- A horse is recovering in Louisville, after being rescued from a muddy ditch off of Aiken Road at the Curry Farms development. At about 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday night, Becki and Greg Streif say they got a knock on their door and were alerted to the horse being stuck in a ditch. Now, the Streifs are housing the horse at their animal sanctuary for at least as long as until he recovers. The unnamed horse is in good spirits and appears to be unscathed; a veterinarian will examine him to be sure.

The Streifs operate their own private animal sanctuary, and are in the process of converting into a nonprofit. On Wednesday night, the couple spent hours helping in the rescue efforts. Becki says there were some 20 people all volunteering to help save the horse's life. She says she's been in touch with the owner who wants to give the horse to the sanctuary, but they're unsure of whether they will take him permanently. Streif says he escaped from his home because a gate was left open.
