RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. -- $1.2 million will be used to expand the Deep River Trail that connects four municipalities in Randolph County.

  • The addition to the forested trail connects a 3/4 mile section of a trail on an old rail-bed that parallels the deep Deep River to make a three-mile round trip hike.
  • Mayor Conner says he hopes this trail will help enrich people's wellness and lifestyle in the community, which he says will attract more businesses to move there and more tourists to visit.
  • By the end of this year, Randolph County Officials hope to have about seven miles of the 15-mile trail completed.

The newest section of this project just opened up in Franklinville.

The addition to the forested trail connects a 3/4 mile section of a trail on an old rail-bed that parallels the deep Deep River to make a three-mile round trip hike.

Franklinville Mayor Perry Conner says the first phase of the trail opened in 2009 and the second phase opened last Saturday.

Mayor Conner says he hopes this trail will help enrich people's wellness and lifestyle in the community, which he says will attract more businesses to move there and more tourists to visit.

"You've got access to fishing, canoeing, kayaking, picnicking, just all the things you want to do outside," said Mayor Conner.

By the end of this year, Randolph County officials hope to have about seven miles of the 15-mile trail completed.
