AUSTIN, Texas — The mother of the student killed in a stabbing on the University of Texas campus two years ago has filed a lawsuit against the attacker, his parents, and the health care providers that treated the assailant in the months leading up to the attack.

Lori Brown, the mother of Harrison Brown, filed the lawsuit on April 30 in a state district court in Travis County.

According to the lawsuit, Kendrex White, the attacker, had a history of psychotic symptoms and was on the path to hurting himself or others. The suit claims White’s parents and health care providers neglected to prevent White from hurting others.
The lawsuit says even though White was found not guilty by reason of insanity, he is still civilly liable for his own negligence. The lawsuit states the following:

“By way of this lawsuit, Lori Brown seeks some measure of justice and hopes to bring about awareness, change and protections for and from those with severe mental illness, and to help prevent other parents from suffering the same heartbreaking loss that she suffered.”
On May 1, 2017, Kendrex White stabbed Harrison Brown to death and injured several others on UT campus near Gregory Gymnasium. White was found not guilty by reason of insanity in December 2018 and placed in North Texas State Hospital in Vernon.
