RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. -- Randolph County bought 104 acres of land in Asheboro years ago, hoping to build an Agricultural Events Center.

  • The county realized just one phase was still tens of millions of dollars so the project is currently on hold
  • Instead the county budget will focus on other areas like school construction and expansion of the correctional facility
  • However, further south the renovation of Luck's Cannery is going strong. Seagrove Mayor David Fernandez says the project is speeding along, and the event center could be complete this fall

The cost to complete it all at once was about $55 million dollars, so the county looked into construction phases. They realized just one phase was still tens of millions of dollars so the project is currently on hold.

"I don't see it as imminent. I don't see it as a project that the county is going to begin construction on or financing on in the near future because of so many challenges that Randolph County Government is facing right now," County Manager Hal Johnson said.

Instead the county budget will focus on other areas like school construction and expansion of the correctional facility.

However, further south, the renovation of Luck's Cannery is going strong. Seagrove Mayor David Fernandez says the project is speeding along, and the event center could be complete this fall.

"Right now in Randolph County there isn't a facility that can house 1000 people sitting in auditorium style or 500 people sitting at banquet tables. Our facility will allow that," Fernandez said.

He hopes the unique facility will bring in people who wouldn't travel to Seagrove normally.
