CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. -- Seven months after Hurricane Florence, Carteret County Schools are reassessing their students’ needs.
- Most of the $13 million worth of infrastructure repairs are finished.
- What is left is behind the scenes work on things like air conditioning.
- The foundation has helped cover costs of new septic tanks, roofs, and gas for families who are still working to recover.

Superintendent Mat Bottoms says in the meantime, students’ needs have been covered by the county’s Public School Foundation.
“Hundreds of thousands of dollars have come in and we’ve been able to get that money back out to our families without taking anything off the top there’s no salaries that come out of that so every penny someone donates goes right back to a kid’s family,” said Bottoms.
