GREENSBORO, N.C. -- One year after it was damaged by a tornado that hit the east side of Greensboro, the Guilford County Schools superintendent is going to recommend closing Hampton Elementary School to the board.

  • The storm left students at Peeler Open Elementary School, Hampton Elementary School, and Erwin Montessori without a school.
  • The district said it expects negotiations with insurance to wrap up within the next month.
  • Peeler Open Elementary School students will remain at Bluford Elementary while Erwin Montessori students will remain at Alamance Elementary next year.

The storm left students at Peeler Open Elementary School, Hampton Elementary School, and Erwin Montessori without a school.

Dr. Sharon Contreras said it has been a difficult year.

"It's a very difficult process because you do not know what you're going to receive from insurance companies," she said.

The district said it expects negotiations with insurance to wrap up within the next month.

Contreras said the buildings are not a total loss.

"You wouldn't have to tear the buildings down, demolish the buildings, and then start over again, but they would require significant repairs. It's sort of like putting a band-aid on a wound. These are old buildings," she said.

She said that does not mean the board will decide not to rebuild.

The district said Peeler Open Elementary School students will remain at Bluford Elementary while Erwin Montessori students will remain at Alamance Elementary next year.
