GREENSBORO, N.C. -- City officials are excited about the outlook of Greensboro, thanks to a recent Growth and Development Trends Study.
- The January 2019 report showed mostly positive growth.
- The study also showed Greensboro had the most diverse population in the area.
- Infant mortality is up, and the population is aging.
The Planning Department combines local, state and federal numbers to see how the city is doing in major areas.
The January 2019 report showed mostly positive growth.
"The wages are going up, that the unemployment rate is the lowest it's been since 2000 at 3.3 percent. We're really seeing some hopeful signs that this is going to continue for Greensboro," Planning Director Sue Schwartz said.
The study also showed Greensboro had the most diverse population in the area. Fifty-two percent of the population represented minorities.
"This has always been a wonderful place that embraces a lot of different people, and that continues and that is part of what makes Greensboro an incredible place to be," Schwartz said.
District 3 Representative Justin Outling said the numbers reflect years of hard work.
"This report validates the fact that it's important to plan for the future. Assess where we are now, but also look to the future. Very excited about the update to our comprehensive plan being similarly successful," Outling said.
These numbers will help the city update the comprehensive plan. The plan helps map out the next 20 years for Greensboro, and how and where officials want to grow and move forward.
All the numbers weren't positive, however. Infant mortality is up, and the population is aging.
The number of millennials in Greensboro fell, which will become a point of focus.
"We still need to attract and retain millennials and now the next and following generation, the Gen Z folks. We need to have those younger people as part of our community, as part of our workforce to take care of Greensboro moving forward," Schwartz said.
