RALEIGH, N.C. – More charges have been filed after three suspects were charged in connection to the shooting of a Raleigh officer Wednesday night.

• Officer C.D. Ainsworth was shot while on duty Wednesday night.
• It happened around 8 p.m. on Western Boulevard near Blue Ridge Road, up the road from NC State's main campus.

According to Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown, Officer Charles Ainsworth is out of surgery and in recovery. The department is asking for continued prayers from the community. She told the media during a press conference that the family wishes to keep the officer's medical information private and that the department is lending support.

"This is challenging moment for us but know that the dedication is there,” she said. "This will be a long journey but we will get through it."

Sources say the officer was shot multiple times in the face and neck.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Wednesday on Western Boulevard near Schaub Road, close to the K-mart near N.C. State.

The police chief also addressed gun violence in the community. 

"Our community suffers when anyone is hurt and when anyone is hurt by gun violence," she said. "Let's make a difference in our community when it comes to gun violence. This is our city."

Raleigh police arrested two suspects in connection to the shooting itself.

The first suspect, Cedric Jamal Kearney, has been charged with attempted murder, assault on a law enforcement officer, and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He received an additional charge Thursday evening of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm on Officer B.A. Halpin, who was with Officer Ainsworth at the time of the shooting. Officials say Kearney fired at Officer Halpin after shooting Officer Ainsworth. Officer Halpin returned fire but didn't hit anyone.

Police believe Richmond and Kearney robbed a man at gunpoint and stole his car before Ainsworth tracked them down. They're set to go back to court later this month.

Raleigh Mayor, Nancy McFarlane issued a statement on the shooting saying:

“The brave men and women of the Raleigh Police Department put themselves in harm's way each and every day. Officers like Charles Ainsworth do whatever it takes to keep our city safe. We are all; Council members, City staff, and residents, thinking of Officer Ainsworth as he continues to receive care at WakeMed. We will also be thinking of all the officers who carry on today with heavy hearts, and thank them for their service.”
