NORTH CAROLINA -- Amid calls for Rachel Hunt, the daughter of former Gov. Jim Hunt, to not be seated at the State House for District 103, the NC Values Coalition says its uncovered irregularities in some absentee ballots.

  • It says more than 300 absentee ballots in the Mecklenburg County race were illegally cast, and that would have changed the outcome of the election.
  • Republican incumbent Bill Brawley lost his State House seat to Democratic challenger Rachel Hunt by 68 votes in a recount.
  • All this comes as the investigation in similar irregularities continues in the 9th Congressional District.

It says more than 300 absentee ballots in the Mecklenburg County race were illegally cast, and that would have changed the outcome of the election.

"We were surprised by the results ourselves. We were not phishing for something to overturn Bill Brawley's defeat," N.C. Values Coalition executive director Tami Fitzgerald said.

Republican incumbent Bill Brawley lost his State House seat to Democratic challenger Rachel Hunt by 68 votes. That result was after a recount and it was the last legislative race to be called.

"There were ballots that had date discrepancies between when the voter signed the ballot and the witnesses signed the ballot," she said.

Brawley was one of the co-chairs of the powerful House finance committee.

The race was also one of the most expensive in the state, with Hunt raising more than $1 million.

"Given these improprieties, the negligence of the now-defunct board of elections, and the clear conflicts of its past two chairmen, it is clear that the board mishandled these two elections and who knows how many others," Fitzgerald said.

All this comes as the investigation in similar irregularities continues in the 9th Congressional District.
