Winston-Salem, N.C. – Last week’s 14 inches of snow cut into traffic at the 5th Street Barber Shop.

Owner Donnie Hilliard's been a barber some 30 years and took a little time off.

"I built a snow dog,” Hilliard laughed, “It was shaped like a Saint Bernard, I put a little hat on it and a scarf.

The weather also delayed his garbage pickup.

"They came by during the week, after we removed some of the snow off of the sidewalk,” said Hilliard.

The snow slowed many things to a crawl in the city.

"A decision was made by our sanitation operations staff to delay pickup for employee safety reasons," said city spokesman Randy Britton.

Britton says crews were picking up curbside a few days later and worked through the weekend. They're back on schedule this week.

“We just continued to work our way through each and every neighborhood throughout the city,” said Britton.

With 80,000 customers, crews could have missed a few.

"Employees are responding to calls of missed collections, if they were scheduled to be collected that particular day," said Britton.

Hilliard counts on his weekly trash pickup,  especially with the pre-holiday business.

"I hadn't put any reindeers on anybody's heads, but they are getting haircuts," said Hilliard.

Garbage collection for the city of Winston-Salem will be delayed a day the week of Christmas.
