GREENSBORO, N.C. -- For the third time in just nine years, Greensboro is hosting the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

On Tuesday the Greensboro Coliseum Complex announced they were selected to house the 2020 event.

"No city in the southeastern United States has ever, or even the southern United States, has ever hosted this event three times." Hill Carrow said. He's the chairman of the host committee that worked to bring the championships back.

Another member of the committee, Paul Wylie, won the 1992 Olympic Silver Medal and thinks this will bolster North Carolina figure skating as a whole.

"It's obviously a great shot in the arm to the figure skating community in North Carolina, because our athletes are going to be able to drive here, and be exposed to it, work as volunteers," Wyle said.

He thinks Greensboro made a great impression on athletes when it hosted in 2011 and 2015.

"I think they love coming here because they feel like the audience is very warm and welcoming. When you're skating in front of a crowd it's weird. You can tell somehow," Wylie said.

Mayor Nancy Vaughan tweeted that the 2015 event made a $27 million economic impact on the community.

Carrow thinks the week will be a success, in no small part to the nearly 400 volunteers that will help the event run smoothly.

"Here enough people have done enough work in sports. They know the hierarchy and a lot of the terminology. They know the drill and that gets us a long way on the training," Carrow said.

The championship dates are January 20-26 and tickets are already on sale here.
