HIGH POINT, N.C.-- First responders in the Triad now have a better way to save your pets after smoke inhalation.
- Invisible Fence of the Triad and the community donated 37 pet oxygen mask kits.
- That is enough to supply High Point and Guil-Rand Fire Departments as well as High Point and Archdale Police K-9s.
- These new oxygen masks are snout shaped, and can go on the dogs much easier.
"I know there's been plenty of cases in the High Point area where fires have taken someone's home and their pets are needing rescue. Normally, they're supplied oxygen through a human mask,” said Paul Streba with Invisible Fence of the Triad.
Invisible Fence of the Triad donated 23 pet oxygen mask kits. The community donated some too, bringing the total to 37. That is enough to supply High Point and Guilrand Fire Departments as well as High Point and Archdale Police K-9s.
"It could go for anything from dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, you name it,” said Captain David Peters with the High Point Fire Department.
Peters said his firefighters encounter pets needing rescue all the time.
"Currently what we have on the truck is for an adult,” Peters said.
"There's excess oxygen that is not being directly supplied for that animal,” Streba said.
These new oxygen masks are snout shaped, and can go on the dogs much easier. Plus, they're reusable.
"So these pet oxygen masks do give them as much as they can possibly receive, oxygen-wise,” Streba said.
Pet owners can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the new equipment gives their fur baby a better chance of survival.
"I would be so happy to see a rescuer come in and be able to give my pet oxygen the proper way. That they are getting everything they need, and not struggling,” Streba said.
The kits also have leashes and will be kept inside the fire trucks.
