GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Bird electric scooters are out of Greensboro, possibly for good.
- Bird scooters were dropped off in August
- The company removed all scooters after violating city ordinance
- City officials say people were leaving them on sidewalks
After months of violating city ordinance, the company removed all their scooters from the area.
Ever since the Bird scooters were dropped off in August, city departments have worked on replacing the ordinance banning electric scooters from downtown sidewalks and city streets.
Officials let scooter use slide in recent months until the concerns became too great.
"I would just say we have had concerns with operation on sidewalks at speed, and also problems with people leaving them blocking sidewalks," Chris Spencer said. He is the engineering division manager for Department of Transportation, and is working on the ordinance proposal.
They want to find a solution that works for everyone.
"If we do allow them we want to make sure they're done in the right way. They're done safely. They're parked appropriately so that they're not creating problems for other users of our transportation system," Spencer said.
The city was given no notice by Bird that the scooters were coming, which gave them no time to prepare or tell the city about the current ordinance.
City Council member Justin Outling has heard concerns and support from his constituents. He's disappointed the city asked Bird to remove the scooters.
"In any event, it will be a short pause. The scooters will not be here for a week or so. I'm confident we'll adopt an ordinance, and we'll be right back to vibrancy in an even safe environment," Outling said.
The proposal will be presented to City Council on November 20.
