New filings with the State Department of Labor show Global Foundries plans to lay off 424 people at the Malta Fab8 location.

There are 3,400 employees at the plant that manufactures semiconductors. Another 31 employees at Global Foundries' Fuller Road offices are also being laid off.

The layoffs are expected to begin on November 28. Earlier this week, the company said it planned to cut about 5 percent of its 17,000-person global work force.

Global Foundries says it wants to shift the focus from advanced research to differentiated technologies.
