ELON, N.C.-- Elon University plans to unveil a handful of major projects this fall, including a new residence hall and a 5,100-seat multiplex.

  • The residence hall will house 300 students, living in learning communities and focused on civic engagement
  • The center will also host commencements, concerts and other community events
  • School officials say these projects are a way to keep up with the growing population

The residence hall will house 300 students, living in learning communities and focused on civic engagement.

The new multiplex is called the Schar Center, and will be the home to the University's basketball and volleyball teams.

The center will also host commencements, concerts and other community events throughout the year.

School officials say these projects are a way to keep up with the growing population.

Jon Dooley, the Vice President of Student Life at the university, said, “With the residential neighborhoods as well as the faculty and staff actively engaged with students outside the classroom, the things that we’re doing here are very unique in the landscape of higher education and we’re really proud of not just the facilities themselves, but what happens inside those facilities.”

Dave Blank, the Director of Athletics, said the Schar Center could help recruit new athletes, and students to the school. “It’s kind of a cornerstone facility for a campus the size of Elon University and we’re excited about it. It continues to build on the national appeal of our university.”

The school also plans to open a brand new learning center, and unveil the two-story expansion of the original McEwen dining hall this fall.
