LEXINGTON-- The city of Lexington is cracking down on the city-wide garbage and recycling ordinance.
- If you leave your roll-out cans at the curb for more than 24 hours after pick up, the city will tag your cans
- After three warnings, the city will apply a $50 fine to your monthly utility bill
- The new regulation went into effect July 1
If you leave your roll-out cans at the curb for more than 24 hours after pick up, the city will tag your cans with a bright green sticker, serving as a warning.
After three warnings, the city will apply a $50 fine to your monthly utility bill.
Officials say the enforcement was sparked by neighbors’ complaints, but it's also a way to preserve the beauty of the neighborhoods.
"It's the little things we can do. If you travel through a neighborhood where all roll-outs are out of sight and then you ride through a neighborhood where there are some roll outs that are in view that should not be, it's definitely an appearance issue."
"I think it’s a great thing. We walk three miles every day, and nobody wants to walk by where somebody's left their garbage out there for three days," said Clark Morgan, who lives in Lexington.
The new regulation went into effect July 1.
Crews from the city's recycling and waste department will drive through neighborhoods the day after collection, to enforce the new regulation.
