A month of record rainfall set the table for potential flood problems in western North Carolina. Then, over the past few days, huge rain totals have occurred in portions of the region as deep tropical moisture, drawn into the region on the east side of Alberto, led to numerous areas of rain and storms.

McDowell and Rutherford counties have been especially hard-hit. Just over the past 48 hours, some locations in those counties picked up nearly 10" of rain, estimated by radar.
All of this rain has led to numerous mudslides and flash flooding. The dam at Lake Tahoma was also impacted by a mudslide that potentially weakened the structure, and crews were on-scene checking the stability of the dam as of this typing.
We still have a couple of days ahead with pretty good chances of scattered showers and storms. Both today and Thursday will feature a healthy coverage of scattered showers and storms with highs in the low to mid 80s. Again, with saturated ground conditions, some localized flash flooding issues could occur.
As we head into Friday and the weekend, the trend will be toward fewer afternoon storms. Friday and Saturday also look pretty toasty with highs in the upper 80s. Temperatures then look to cool down a good bit for Sunday and Monday.
