GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Department of Transportation is replacing old pavement on Interstate 40/85 and they don't plan to wrap up until October.

  • Construction not planned to end until October.
  • It will take place between 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Take U.S. 70 to avoid traffic back-ups.

For the next six months, drivers can expect a nightly slow down from a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on an eight mile stretch starting at the University Drive exit in Elon.

"They will go southward on 85 or 40 west all the way to the Lee Street Exit on 40," stated Paul Ingram, an engineer at the N.C. department of transportation.

Transportation officials say this project is a continuation of work that they started last year and cost about $12.5 million.

An alternate route for drivers trying to avoid traffic is U.S. Highway 70.
