KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- With a scan of your drivers license, some Winston-Salem Forsyth County schools will now be able to check your background when you visit. It's part of added security measures at several schools, including Sedge Garden Elementary in Kernersville.

Once you scan your ID, it gives the school your full name and date of birth while checking the sexual offenders list. If the check raises a red flag, it alerts the school.

"We don't know the backgrounds of everyone who comes into our building and this is a very quick check to make sure that we don't have someone who is known to not be able to be around kids coming on to our campus whether that's an aunt or uncle of someone who's here and does have a purpose or someone who has no reason to be here at all," says Principal Donald Wyatt.

Sedge Garden's parent teacher associated paid for this upgrade. The school board tells us they are deciding whether to pay for every school in the district to implement it.
