WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A portion of Business Interstate 40 in North Carolina will be closed over the weekend to allow workers to remove a bridge.

From Friday, March 9 at 9 p.m. to Sunday, March 11 at 11 a.m., all lanes of Business 40 between Peters Creek Parkway and Cloverdale Avenue will be closed as the West Fourth Street Bridge is demolished.

This fall, both lanes of Business I-40 will be closed in both directions for 20 months along a one-mile stretch downtown. When completed, a new and improved freeway will move traffic through downtown more quickly.

Construction is also set to begin in March for a new tunnel under Peters Creek Parkway near BB&T Ballpark. It is part of a new path that will run along Business 40 to connect with the Strollway Land Bridge next to the Liberty Street bridge.
