BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo announced Wednesday it is eliminating its weekend bus service that brought students back and forth from its North to South Campus on Friday and Saturday nights.
It's a move Buffalo Common Councilman Rasheed Wyatt has been pushing for for years.
"Many times we made recommendations and we got push back. This time they seem to have a plan that has incorporated the sentiments of the residents and I'm going to receive that," said Wyatt.
Getting rid of the night-time shuttle some students lovingly refer to as the 'drunk bus' is a goal Wyatt worked toward for a while.
But something that wasn't a factor when he started the fight was ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft.
So for now, Wyatt is taking a wait and see approach.
"We're crossing our fingers and really hoping there's a better outcome than in previous years. But it was brought up in a meeting last night about students being able to utilize Uber since they won't be able to utilize the bus and get to south campus," said Wyatt.
And Kunz is hopeful it will help, but thinks things won't really change until UB takes a more hands-on approach with its students.
"Tell them how to behave properly because they just don't know that and they haven't been taught. They have to get the message out that there's no partying going on in this place. This isn't party city anymore," said Kunz.
The new bus schedule goes into effect August 25.
