BUFFALO, N.Y. -- It's the tortoise and the hare narrative with a twist. Instead of falling asleep before racing to the finish line Celery, always gets distracted and either Bleu Cheese, Chicken Wing or Atomic Wing takes home the win.

Why does Celery get distracted?

"I don't know, if I had an answer, I wouldn't be 0 and 449," Celery said.

However, in the tale of the loveable green stalk against other Buffalo staple foods, Celery is the underdog everyone can't help but root for.

"It is the city of good neighbors and we like to pick each other up when we are down and I think Bisons' fans have done their picking me up when i was down," Celery said.

Going into Wednesday night's final race the vegetable will be hoping to end its run 1 in 449.

"This just seemed like the next stage," Celery said. "There is only so much a vegetable can do."

Before the stands are packed with fans cheering for the marshland plant, there's a lesson behind its poor record it wants to make sure Bisons fans remember.

"You know, just don't ever give up," Celery said. "Keep trying and if you love something put your heart and soul into it. Whether you get wins or losses, at the end of the day, you'll feel like a success."

Brad Bisbing, the communications director for the Bisons has stood by Celery's side through thick and thin. He even serves as the stalks' translator.

"You can't help but love that hard work and determination,' Bisbing said.

Like pretty much everyone, Bisbing is hoping Celery's final lap from the outfield toward home base is a success.

"We really want Celery to come out on top," Bisbing said. "But, when it's 0 for 449, I don't know if it's in in the cards, we will have to see."

But don't worry the final lap really isn't goodbye. Celery will still be around to spread his Buffalove, taking on a new role in the stands. It's the end of a chapter and a start to a new adventure.

"This has been a dream come true," Celery said. "Ever since I was a seedling, growing in a garden, I dreamed of one day being able to partake in a race like this and entertain the great sports fans of Western New York."

Fans can catch the last race following the game Wednesday against Pawtucket.

At Thursday's game, fans will be able to meet the green celebrity during the game for autographs.
