AUSTIN, Texas -- City leaders and nonprofits are kicking off a new initiative to improve the lives of Austin residents.
The new program adds extra resources to the ARCH and downtown area to help ease the stress of homelessness.

Funding and more beds are just the beginning of the effort.
"Some of the changes you'll see over the next month include increased lighting in this area, public restrooms outside the ARCH, a greater presence from the homelessness outreach street team, increased Austin Police Department presence, enhanced food distribution and increased coordinated assessment,” said Mayor Pro Tem Kathie Tovo.
Specific efforts include:
• Increasing temporary lighting in key areas
• Installing temporary restrooms
• Increasing street cleaning in key areas
• Increasing police presence and anti-drug initiatives
• Informing clients about other locations for meals and showers and daytime activities
• Transforming how, when and where food is distributed to prevent those experiencing homelessness from being targeted by criminal predators
• Identifying ways to expand access to services and permanent housing to help people move from homelessness to stability
City leaders did not give a price tag for the program. ECHO's director says they're receiving some private money and help from Austin police. Mayor Steve Adler said the program will also target K-2 dealers and those who prey on the homeless community.
