A city police department officer was released from a hospital Friday afternoon, one day after he was shot three times in Brooklyn.
Officer Hart Nguyen walked out of Jamaica Hospital on his own power, with his right arm in a sling, to applause from more than 100 people, most of whom were police officers.
The 30-year-old and two-year veteran of the department will continue to recover at his home in Gravesend.
Nguyen is expected to make a full recovery after a man shot him hit twice in his bulletproof vest and once in the arm.
"This is an example of the bravery of the men and women of the NYPD. This is an example of the fact that our officers go into any situation, and how it might turn on a moment's notice," Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters Thursday. "Thank God our officer is going to come through OK in this case."
Investigators in Brooklyn said a woman had called police Thursday afternoon, saying her 29-year-old son was emotionally disturbed, but non-violent and unarmed.
Officers responded to the apartment on Ridgewood Ave. in Cypress Hills around 5 p.m.
Nguyen, who has been with the department for two years, had walked toward the back of the apartment when the man opened fire, police said.
Nguyen did not return fire, and was treated at the scene before first-responders rushed him to the hospital.
Police found the gunman, identified as Andy Sookdeo, dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a two-hour stand-off Thursday.
Two guns and ammunition were recovered in the apartment, police said.
Law enforcement sources told NY1 on Friday evening that when investigators entered the bedroom room where they found the shooter dead Thursday, they found that he had drawn a swastika on the wall.
Sources said the message "I die with a joyful heart" was near it.
