SAN ANTONIO - Family, friends and loved ones said their final farewell to local activist Jaime Martinez.

"Jaime used to live here in a little old rundown house. It's not here anymore," said LULAC Concilio Zapatista Executive Director Henry Rodriguez.

His childhood home might not still be here, but it was in this neighborhood that the activism of Jaime Martinez took root.

"This was the very beginning of something that's beautiful. The man had a beautiful history, all the way to his death. He never gave up," Rodriguez said.

Friends say he was always willing to help anyone who would ask.

For decades he dedicated his life to the labor movement and pushing forward the message of Cesar Chavez.

"It was a pleasure walking alongside a legend. He was a legend in my eyes," said Martha Macias.

For many, he touched their lives through guidance and the Cesar Chavez Legacy and Educational Foundation.

"I've known Jaime for about 10 years. He actually did help me out as a college student. He provided scholarships and fundraising for young people and for the community," Jesus Ramirez said.

Now with hearts filled with hope, the community can say goodbye.
