A Maspeth park that hasn't seen a renovation since the 1980s will soon be getting some love. Local officials unveiled the new designs for the ball fields at Frank Principe Park Thursday.

City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley gave nearly $7 million for the makeover.

The renovated space will have two baseball diamonds and one soccer field made of synthetic turf instead of grass. There will also be new trees, bleachers and water fountains.

“I know that both Frank Principe and James Maurice are looking down on us smiling and saying 'finally,'” said Crowley.

“It gives kids an opportunity to play in a facility where they can't get hurt, added Michael LoCascio, the Athletic Director of St. Stanislaus Athletic Association. “You look at the field, there's a lot of potholes, the grass isn't cut all the time.”

Construction is expected to start this fall.
