ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Justin Sullivan will spend the rest of his life in prison.

He's the Burke County man who pleaded guilty last year to planning to kill hundreds in the name of ISIS.

This case has garnered nationwide attention ever since Justin Sullivan was arrested by the FBI in 2015 for attempting a terrorist attack.

Sullivan's defense attorneys and the government came to a plea agreement last November to life in prison, and on Tuesday, the federal judge said he approved and will apply the life in prison sentencing.

Justin Sullivan's parents were in court for the sentencing. They were also in court for the plea agreement last year.

They became emotional during the hearing.

Justin Sullivan did address the court and said that he did not want to be misjudged.

He said he was not a bad person. Twice he said he should have never moved down to Morganton and the life in prison was an unfair sentence.

The judge called this case cold calculated, despicable and cowardly.

Sullivan also has a pending state murder case against him. He's been charged with killing a 74-year-old Morganton man, John Clark. Clark's family was in court but did not want to speak. That case is still pending.

Sullivan addressed the court, saying that the comment about him being a murderer is a complete lie.

The defense is concerned about Sullivan's mental health and does not want him to be kept in a high security prison. That is up to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
