Both sides of a wrongful death lawsuit against former NASCAR driver Tony Stewart are trying to reach a settlement.

Stewart is being sued by the family of Kevin Ward Jr. Ward was hit and killed by Stewart's car during a race in Canandaigua in 2014.

Ward had gotten out of his vehicle following a crash and walked onto the track. He was hit when Stewart performed what's known as a slide job. Stewart was cleared of criminal wrongdoing, but Ward's family claims Stewart, despite knowing the risk, purposely drove his car into Ward.

Stewart and Ward's family were in federal court in Syracuse this morning for a settlement conference. We're still waiting to learn if they reached a deal.
