AUSTIN, Texas -- Severe weather is the No. 1 type of natural disaster in Texas.
Not only do we see thunderstorms every month of the year, we live close enough to the coast for tropical disturbances, like Tropical Storm Cindy, to deliver wind, rain, and potential damage to property and threat to life from June to November, the Atlantic hurricane season.
It certainly doesn't happen every year but, when it does, life can turn upside down in a hurry.
And so that's why we take a moment to bring up the topic of preparedness, to teach all new residents and act as a refresher for the rest of the natural threats we can face all year round.
Here's the question: Can you rest easy at night knowing that you are prepared?
In the above video, Mark McGillivray, Allstate's Senior Vice President of Claims, speaks with our Chief Meteorologist Burton Fitzsimmons about plans every family make and talk about right now, before the next natural disaster strikes.
We also learn how new technology -- specifically, the use of smartphone apps and drones -- aids in assessment, rescue and recovery.
