ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A Steuben County man remains in the hospital after the sedan he was driving crashed into a roadside emergency truck pulled over Tuesday morning on the southbound side of the Interstate 590.
The car hit the back of a State Farm HELP truck, which careened into a disabled van onto the shoulder and hit two people standing in front of the van. The crash happened around 8:45 a.m. between the exits for Empire and Browncroft boulevards.
The driver of the truck was treated at the scene for a head injury, while the two people hit on the roadside suffered injuries described as minor.
State troopers say heroin and hypodermic needles were found in the sedan. The driver, David Young, 61, of Prattsburgh faces charges which include DWI, criminal possession of a controlled substance, possession of a hypodermic needle, and assault, along with traffic violations.
Before announcing the arrest, State Police once again reinforced the importance of the Move Over Law, which was expanded last year to include most cars with flashing colored lights.
“It happens almost on a daily basis, where two trucks, emergency services personal, construction workers are struck or nearly struck by motorists,” said State Police Trooper Mark O’Donnell. “There are close calls every day in this region and throughout the state. It's imperative that people understand these people have families they want to get home to at the end of the day. We can make that happen if we simply reduce our speeds and move over."
