HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. – Officials with the Orange Water and Sewer Authorities say a computer malfunction by a third-party service provider, which caused mistakes to be included in electronic bill reminders earlier this week, has been fixed.

Wednesday, the service provider sent bill payment reminders to about 1,600 customers who pay their OWASA bills by automatic payment.

The message said a large erroneous payment would be charged to customers’ credit card or debited from their bank account. The mistake, however, only affected the email notifications.

OWASA says account balances were not impacted and are correct.

“We sincerely apologize to our customers who received the erroneous electronic notifications and we are working with our service provider to try to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” said Stephen Winters, director of Finance and Customer Service.

The problem first came to light when Kieran Healy took to Twitter about after he received a message that his June payment would total $100,000,188.92

Healy later said OWASA assured him he did not owe that high of an amount.
