SAN ANTONIO -- Just about all homeowners can agree that landscaping can get expensive, especially in the summer when it comes to using water.

"It has been such a nice Spring, we've been getting regular rains, and all of a sudden it's decided to get very hot and dry which is normal for San Antonio," said Conservation Director Karen Guz.

It's totally normal, and that's why SAWS wants to put water conservation right at your finger tips. All you need is seven points.

"And what you get for that is a $70 coupon you can use as cash at local vendors to buy yourself water saver plants, soil, mulch, and even a rain barrel," Guz said.

In the new SAWS WaterSaver rewards program, you earn points by attending different events and by updating your own yard.

"Typically if you turn on an irrigation system to water grass, you use a minimum of 2,000 gallons every time you water all of it," said Guz.

It's a lot of water and you can get a lot of points if you retire your old system.

"It is not unusual to see that 70 percent of the water used could be going on your landscape," Guz said.

In addition to those watersaving rewards, they're also offering some landscape and patioscaping coupons. So, say you're a new homeowner or your lawn needs a little TLC, all you have to do is go online and click apply.

"It gives you a $100 coupon that you can use as cash at local vendors to buy the plants you need," said Guz.

And with the official start of Summer right around the corner, conserving water can mean a lower bill.

"This is a great time for us to remind everybody that we have a wonderful pallet of plants that thrive in San Antonio Texas," Guz said.
