GREENSBORO -- Across the state, fewer people are signing up for basic law enforcement training, a course required to become a police officer.
That decline is putting a strain on police departments who don't have enough officers to cover all the cases on their plates.
Nearly every agency in the Piedmont-Triad is trying to fill a handful of positions or more.
Here are some vacancies from around the Triad:
- Winston-Salem Police Department - 36 openings; 534 currently sworn-in
- Mt. Airy Police Department - 6 vacancies with 3 currently in the training class, committed to joining the force
- Burlington Police Department - 8 vacancies; 128 sworn-in officers
- High Point Police - 6 vacancies for sworn-in officers; hiring 8 more through a federal grant to focus on specific cases
- Reidsville Police - 4 open positions to fill their cap of 50
- Asheboro Police - Not hiring; just over-hired anticipating retirements
