CHARLOTTE - Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating the city's latest homicides.
They found 34-year-old Jennifer Smith's body inside a Steele Creek townhouse Wednesday afternoon. They say she was in a relationship with the killer.
Hours later, they found 19-year-old Kevin Marquez's body inside the apartment complex on Spanish Quarter Circle. They say he was shot and killed.
Retired CMPD Homicide Detective Garry McFadden says this year's murder rate takes him back to one of Charlotte's deadliest years.
"In 1993, of course, we had, you know the 120-something murders that we had. Not saying that we're getting to that point now, but the community needs to understand that they must, or need to work with law enforcement at this point,” said Garry McFadden.
There have now been 27 homicides in 2017.
No one's been arrested in the latest cases.
