SALINA, N.Y. -- We're learning more about a major investment secured by Lockheed Martin's Salina plant.

The Army awarded the company a $1.6 billion contract to build counter fire radar systems. Company officials talked about the contract Monday.

Lockheed is expected to build at least 70 units in the next five years. The units are finished at the company's Salina plant, but are partly made in Owego as well.

Company officials said the contract is a sign of confidence from the Army.

"The simplest way to say it is we build great stuff," Director of Q53 Radar Systems Rick Herodes said. "It's stuff that makes a difference to what we have here in the US and makes a difference in these systems to the lives and the well-being of soldiers."

Lockeed's Salina plant currently has 50 engineering positions open. This contract could lead to further hirings.
