After 45 years in business, a family-owned music store in New Dorp closed its doors Saturday.
Lane Music Center, which specialized in percussion, was well-known for hosting music lessons and selling instruments.
The father of current owner Alan Wilkov first opened the store in 1971, and it had been a staple in the community ever since.
New Year's Eve was the last official day the store was open to customers.
Wilkov said he is ready for retirement. "I'm a little bit tired, I have some health issues that need to be addressed, it is just too many hours of work and too many days anymore for what is coming back," he said. "I've just, I have kind of hit a wall with it."
Wilkov said online retailers have increased competition, heavily impacting brick-and-mortar businesses.
Monday and Tuesday are scheduled to be the shop's clean-out days. Wilkov said the register is the last thing to go, so if you stop in and find something he will gladly make a sale.
