FORSYTH COUNTY -- Downtown Winston-Salem may soon have marked handicapped spaces.

"We don't have any designated. So all spaces downtown are available for the handicap to park unlimited amounts of time," said Assistant City Manager Gregory Turner.

The subject came up at a recent city council meeting. One handicapped driver asked officials to create parking spots specifically for handicapped drivers downtown since parking in general is an issue.

"Once the policy decision is made to put in the handicap parking then the operational staff can work on how it's going to work," said Turner.

City officials are proposing to put one designated handicapped sign along with a cut curb on every block to make it easier for people with wheelchairs or motor scooters. Workers will take a look at the need for spaces and report back to city council.

Officials plan on meeting after the holidays to make a final decision.
