DURHAM -- Duke police are increasing security measures after two crimes were reported near campus in recent days.
On Nov. 30, a woman told Durham police she was sexually assaulted near Swift Avenue and Campus Drive. She said the man grabbed her by the arm, took her into the woods, pulled out a knife, and sexually assaulted her. Police have released a photo of the suspect.
On December 10th, Durham police responded to an armed robbery at the Duke Gardens. Police said the suspect was armed with a knife and taser.
Students say they're taking their own precautions.
"I don't frequently stray too far from campus or places out of sight," said Steven Mazzari.
"It's definitely scary, before I had felt more comfortable walking around late at night," said Jessica Marlow.
Duke University officials sent a letter to students about additional security measures in response to the crimes:
First, Duke Police will increase patrols and provide additional security presence on Central Campus, including Duke and Durham police officers and security personnel. Some officers will be in uniform and others will be in plain clothes. Security officers will be stationed at key locations to monitor activities and serve as an additional resource for students.
Second, Duke Vans will be staged on Central Campus to provide faster and more frequent response to requests for rides. Duke Van Services provide free rides daily during certain hours to and from on-campus locations where bus service is not available. Van service is available 24 hours daily.
