A Christmas tree is back in the center of the Staten Island Mall after being moved outside and festivities canceled last year, sparking controversy among shoppers.

Hundreds gathered in the center court of the mall Friday to light the Christmas tree.

The choir from PS 29 kicked off the ceremony singing christmas carols. A parade featuring Santa Claus followed.

For the past two years the tree was moved outside and last year the parade was cancelled which led to shoppers boycotting the mall.

"We spend a lot of money in the mall, because of the holiday and its nice to just have that respect, to have the tree the nativity, all that right back in the mall," said Jessica Lalicata, a shopper.

"This goes beyond religion, this goes to the heart of the season which is peace on earth, good will toward men and happiness," said Joseph DeMarco, a shopper.

Reservations to see Santa can be made through December 24.
