McLEANSVILLE, N.C. -- An 11-year-old girl was hit by a car while waiting at a bus stop in McLeansville Monday morning.
Around 7:50 Monday morning Sondra Cockman says her granddaughter was hit by a car while waiting for her school bus.
"She was standing back here and she tried to move for him but she wasn't fast enough," Cockman said.
The Eastern Guilford Middle School student was taken to then hospital with a severely fractured ankle, punctured lungs and spleen.
"She is breathing,” Cockman said. “That's the blessing, she is breathing."
Trooper Chris Knox says the suspect immediately fled the scene after the accident but was caught by Cockman’s family member, who chased after him.
"He found the vehicle,” Trooper Knox said. “There was an individual by the vehicle looking at the damage of the vehicle and then we were called."
Authorities say the suspect is 28-year-old Nicholas Alan Williams and is being held at a $100,000 bond at Guilford County Detention Center.
"He's [Nicholas Alan Williams] been charged with driving while impaired, felony hit and run, also felony serious injury," said Trooper Knox.
After taking a breathalyzer, Williams blew a .21, almost two times the legal limit of .08.
"He's also being charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon, left of center, failure to maintain lane and an assault on a child under the age of 12," Trooper Knox said.
Sondra Cockman says Monday's accident could have been prevented.
"The signs are up there for 45 but they're not going 45,” Cockman said. “They're going 55 and 60 and losing control."
She says she's asked the state to put guardrails up for years and is now fed up.
"How many lives are going to be gone or injured for them to understand that something needs to be resolute?" Cockman said.
Troopers are still investigating the scene as they build their case against Williams.
