WINSTON-SALEM -- Wake Forest University is honoring the king of golf by latching onto his iconic umbrella logo.

"Everybody knows about the Arnold Palmer drinks. I've become a fan of those since coming here because they have them all the time," said Emily Adams, a Wake Forest University junior.

That might be the only way some people know of the seven-time major golf champion Arnold Palmer. But the Wake Forest University community knows so much more.

"Once you get here, you learn about his golf past, and we have a golf complex dedicated to him," said Adams.

Palmer passed away Sept. 25. Now his alma mater is honoring him by displaying his iconic umbrella logo on their team jerseys and sports fields.

"That will also be on our fields for soccer, field hockey and all of our other venues around Wake Forest both on campus and here off Deacon Boulevard where a lot of our teams play," said Mike Odom, Wake Forest University associate athletic director.

"I actually live right across from the soccer field, so when I walk to class I can see the umbrella on the soccer field, which -- they just unveiled that like two days ago, but my friend is super involved in the soccer team, and he put a picture of it on social media," said Adams.

The university has a program planned to honor Palmer at Saturday night's home football game as the Deacons take on Syracuse.

"He was such an ambassador for the university and just meant so much to so many people here and had a way -- not only folks at Wake Forest, but anyone he interacted with -- by making them feel good and like they were the most important person that he had to talk to that day," said Odom.

Wake Forest officials are asking fans to show up before the gates open Saturday night so people don't miss the special Arnold Palmer tribute.

"To watch the special tribute, we're also passing out stickers with the iconic umbrella logo on that so we'll give those to fans. Then behind our video board, fans will have an opportunity to sign a banner that we will send to the Palmer family at a later date," said Odom.

"It's a big deal here, and I think it's awesome that we're honoring someone like that," said Adams.

An honor fit for a "king."

The Deacons football game starts at 7, but gates open at 5.
