NEW YORK - The city is asking couples who visit the Brooklyn Bridge to find a new way to show their eternal love.
The Department of Transportation is calling for a lockdown, asking visitors to stop leaving padlocks on the Brooklyn Bridge as a symbol of their devotion.
The DOT will soon be posting these signs warning people that they may face a fine of $100.
The agency says the weight of the locks is a safety hazard to motorists driving below.
The DOT says it costs $100,000 of taxpayer money to remove the locks each year.
So far this year, they say workers have removed more than 8,000 locks.
