GREENSBORO -- A proposed development at the intersection of Trosper and Brandt Lake roads is receiving backlash from nearby residents.
Many stood in front of Jesse Wharton Elementary School Wednesday to protest a planned retail and office center possibly coming across the street.
Developer Ken Miller and his company Sun Capital are asking the City of Greensboro to rezone and annex roughly 14 acres for commercial-medium use development on the eastside of Lake Brandt Road.
"We are trying to obtain zoning that will allow for a nice neighborhood scale mix of tenants that could include some office users, it could include some retail commercial users,” said Amanda Hodierne, an attorney with the law firm representing Sun Capital.
Residents opposing the plans said their concerns include more traffic on the two lane road, problems for Jesse Wharton Elementary School, as well as disturbing the watershed and endangering cyclists who ride on the road.
However, neighbors are offering an alternative plan.
"Neighborhood commercial zoning which basically limits the size of buildings and establishments and we feel that is much more compatible with where we are then the commercial medium,” Craig Lawrence said.
Negotiations continue between attorneys to find a compromise.
The Guilford County Board of Education unanimously voted in August to oppose the property rezoning because of the proposed maps indicating at least one store selling alcohol.
The BOE sent a letter to city council informing them of their opposition.
Neighbors plan to speak at the city council meeting on Tuesday.
