HIGH POINT, N.C. -- The sidewalks in downtown High Point have become a little more lively these days.
The High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau has partnered with a local artist to paint 3D murals on the sidewalks near the visitors’ center.
"Whenever people stop here to go to the visitors’ center this is one of the first things that they'll see,” said Brian Davis, the artist responsible for the murals. “So it adds a lot of personality and I have actually seen people interact with it -- illusion and perspective -- and just something new and bright and vivid is something that I'm always after."
Davis is currently working on a third mural for the city which will be a large puzzle in southwest High Point. He hopes it will send a message of inclusion to people from all backgrounds not only living in High Point but visiting as well.
There are pieces of the puzzle missing intentionally. They are reserved for inspirational writing inspired by residents. So far, the city is on board with Davis’ goals.
"It adds interest for visitors coming into town. So when they come into town they want to see something new and unique and exciting,” said Melody Burnett, the director of operation and finance at the High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Something that decorates the city. Something that has pleasing aesthetics, and so any kind of amenities that we can do that appeals to tourism. We're all about those initiatives."
The city is working on policies to add sculptures and more sidewalk art to downtown as part of their beautification efforts.
