STATEWIDE — Scientists say five earthquakes that shook East Texas in 2012 and 2013 were man-made.

The Stanford research team used radar from satellites to track the ground movements during the earthquakes.

Researchers blame hydraulic fracturing — better known as fracking — for causing the quakes.

Fracking is the practice of using a high-pressure water mixture on rocks to release the oil or natural gas inside.

At the time, those earthquakes baffled researchers because they were felt in areas not typically associated with quakes.

Scientists say the earthquakes have stopped now that fracking has dramatically decreased.

Results of the study were published yesterday in the journal Science.
