WINSTON-SALEM -- Pool goers in Winston-Salem are a little bummed the city has to close up shop early this year.

Sunday was the last day of splashing around Happy Hill and Sprague Street Pools for the season.

The city announced a few days ago its summer lifeguard staff is shrinking so it's gradually reducing the number of pools open to make sure they're all staffed.

Officials say the scenario isn't that uncommon but it doesn't usually have this much of an impact.

"It is normal that people start going back to school or having vacations, mission trips, etc. This is the first time that, I've been running pools for 30 years, and this is the first summer that I actually had to take a week earlier of closing pools down."

Happy Hill closed for the season last week due to a broken valve that needs to be fixed.

Mineral Springs and Reynolds Park Pools close next Sunday.
