MEBANE -- After years of trying to keep the building from being torn down, the White Furniture Company building in downtown Mebane has been refurbished and ready for renters.
The new complex consists of 156 apartments. It features studios, one, two and three bedroom units. As of this month, 99 of the 156 units have been leased to renters. The prices range from about $800 to $1,500 a month.
Developer Mike Hill with D3 Development hopes the project will help with the revitalization of downtown Mebane.
"The future is terrific,” said Hill. “It's optimistic and also cool because historic properties are just cool."
Hill added it was important for the city to keep the building as part of its history. The White Furniture Company started in 1881, the same year Mebane was founded.
