CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Twenty military veterans began a week of boot camp Sunday unlike any other they've been through.

It’s all part of the Warrior-Scholar Project Academic Boot Camp at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The boot camp is an intensive program aimed at helping enlisted vets transition to four-year higher education opportunities.

While at UNC, participants will be guided through a course-load led by a team of student veterans and university professors.

The program is designed to assist in preparing the veterans for the emotional and cultural adaptations needed to succeed in a college setting.

"They've done some difficult things. They've sacrificed on our behalf. They're inspiring to us. They'd be inspiring to their classmates,” said Steve Farmer, with enrollment and undergraduate admissions at UNC-Chapel Hill. “The University is really about gathering really incredible people together from all walks of life and having them interact with one another in good ways, and having them leave better than when they showed up."

The academic boot camp is funded by philanthropists and foundation contributions in connection with the university.
